What springtime means to me

The springtime floral show begins with white and pink camelia,
Closely followed by the glorious colours of vibrant uplifting azalia,
Complimented by daffs everywhere, tulips, primrose, magnolia,
Then towards the summer pink blooms appear on our stunning variegated weigelia.

Fresh crisp air from open windows, I’m dreamily wakeful at dawn,
Birds go about their hectic day in nests, in the trees, on the lawn,
Giving an avian heavenly symphony as I stretch and rub and yawn,
While unassuming robins bring some solace to those who mourn.

The chaotic blackbird ballad seems to come from all around,
As chiff chaffs tweet the most ordered and monotonous of sound,
The noise of woodpeckers, cuckoos, sparrows, starlings can soon be found,
Then I’m rudely disturbed from slumber by my keen and eager hound.

She’s waited for some stirring, watching closely like a hawk,
Then pounces, licks my face, steals my socks and I reckon if she could talk,
She’d say child-like ‘dad it’s uptime’, but the hour makes me balk,
She’s wise, she knows her loving pa can’t refuse her favourite walk.

So to the woodland I trudge blurrily, still feeling half asleep,
The bunnies scatter, playing chase and the busy squirrels leap,
The birds from ancient oaks, pine, birch, and sycamores they peep,
As I walk past whispering trees who’ve dropped helicopters, pine-cones, acorns in a heap.

Too quickly home-time comes but on the way there’s such a treat,
Pen and the cob have had their young, five cygnets oh so sweet,
No ugly ducklings to be found, these chicks are surely hard to beat,
In nature’s springtime wonderland of beauty that is laid out at our feet.

Fresh coffee in hand, morning dew on the grass, the garden’s my favourite place,
I reflect on my good fortune as the sunshine warms my face,
Spring’s by far my favourite season, it’s always been the case,
It brings me happiness and joy. It provides light, life, beauty and grace.

It’s the sounds, it’s the smells, it’s the light, it’s the feeling,
It’s the miracle of new life around us that is so appealing,
It’s life affirming, it enthuses, even has the power of healing,
Yes, spring captures our hearts, it brings us joy, such abundance leaves me reeling.
